A serene blend of Japanese matcha and sweet azuki beans in a lusciously creamy panna cotta.

Did you know?

Panna Cotta means 'cooked cream' in Italian, while matcha has been an integral part of Japanese tea ceremonies for centuries, making this dessert a beautiful cultural blend.

Imagine a serene moment in an emerald garden, where the harmonious blend of green tea meets the sweetness of azuki beans in a gentle dance. Our Matcha & Azuki Bean Panna Cotta is an embodiment of this peaceful encounter, a dessert that captures the essence of Japanese aesthetics and flavor with a Western twist. The luxurious cream base, delicately infused with the vibrant intensity of matcha, provides a silky canvas for the luscious azuki beans, each spoonful sending you further into a state of culinary zen.

The matcha's slightly bitter undertones are perfectly balanced by the creamy sweetness of the panna cotta, while the azuki beans add a textural contrast and a hint of traditional Japanese sweetness that makes every bite an exquisite experience. As the dessert sits in your fridge, the flavors meld and bloom, much like the cherry blossoms in spring, enticing you to discover the subtle complexities within.

Ingredients

  • 2 tsp gelatin powder
  • 3 tbsp water
  • 240 ml heavy cream
  • 100 ml milk
  • 50 g sugar
  • 2 tsp matcha powder
  • 150 g sweetened azuki beans

Steps

  1. Begin by softening the gelatin in a small bowl with 3 tbsp of water. Set aside for 5 minutes.
  2. Gently heat the milk in a saucepan over medium flame, then whisk in the matcha powder until fully dissolved.
  3. Add sugar and heavy cream to the matcha mixture and stir over the heat until the sugar dissolves. Do not bring to a boil.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat, add the softened gelatin, and stir until the gelatin is completely dissolved.
  5. Place sweetened azuki beans at the bottom of each ramekin.
  6. Pour the matcha panna cotta mixture over the azuki beans in the ramekins.
  7. Let the panna cottas cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or until set.
  8. To serve, dip the ramekins in warm water for a few seconds and invert onto a serving plate.

Add some extra love

To achieve the perfect matcha flavor, sift the matcha powder before whisking it into the milk to avoid any lumps and ensure a smooth texture in your panna cotta.
